My opponent has been spending a great deal of time introducing and promoting federal legislation concerning the names of the Great Lakes, while overlooking his own prior support, as an assemblyman, for renaming the Tappan Zee Bridge. Last Tuesday, despite public outcry for action on the housing crisis, high utility rates, and many other pressing issues, the Democratic caucus of the Monroe County Legislature made its support for this legislation a Matter of Urgency through a fast-tracked memorializing resolution and proclamation. At the same time, our community faces urgent challenges involving the proposed new rules for Head Start, for which immediate intervention is necessary before the October 6 public-comment deadline. Our local transit system could also have been informed about federal ICAM funding, whose application deadline was last week, or potential Rural Health Transformation funding that could be used to finance transit.
I OPPOSE renaming monuments or landmarks without first gathering meaningful feedback from the communities affected—regardless of which party or political figure proposes it.
However, debates over names should not distract public officials from issues that directly affect people’s quality of life.
The DISTRACTION is always the point. If we are arguing with each other about what name or term to use, we aren’t holding public officials accountable for the fact that THEY AREN’T DOING THEIR JOBS—and they can continue playing political theater while the people need solutions.
The public deserves solutions—not political theater. That’s why I don’t focus on my political affiliation. I’m a Republican, but I’m willing to work with EVERYONE for the benefit of my constituents—period.
Call the lake whatever you want—but bring down gas and utility prices. That is what people are asking their elected officials to address. Everything else is noise.
